**Member of Technical Staff (Software Engineer, Multimodal)** **About the Role** Design and scale distributed backend systems powering realtime voice, vision, and multimodal AI experiences. Own the full path from user input to AI response—session infrastructure, backend orchestration, and SDK integration across Perplexity's platform. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and scale backend session-worker architecture for realtime voice with durable workers, provider routing, and stateful gRPC streaming • Solve distributed-systems problems end-to-end: session lifecycle, crash recovery, reconnection, multi-region deployment, graceful degradation • Build provider-agnostic streaming protocols from backend to Rust SDK across all client stacks • Drive new voice and multimodal AI products from problem definition through launch • Build orchestration layer enabling live voice models to delegate work to tools, agents, and long-running tasks safely and at scale • Partner across SDK, client, infrastructure, and model teams **Required Experience** • 4+ years professional backend or distributed systems engineering • Strong proficiency in Rust, Python, or Go (primary: Rust and Python) • Production distributed systems: streaming RPC (gRPC), stateful services, message-driven architectures, failure recovery • Cloud infrastructure deployment and operations (AWS or equivalent) • Strong product judgment; ability to translate user problems into effective technical solutions • Genuine interest in AI products and quick learning ability **Nice to Have** • Realtime media systems: voice, audio streaming, WebRTC, low-latency transport • Full-stack experience: backend services through client SDKs or web frontends • LLM, speech model, or computer vision integration in production • Agent frameworks, tool-calling architectures, sandboxed execution • Fast-growing startup or high-ownership team experience **Why Perplexity** Craftsmanship • Ownership • Entrepreneurship • Scholarship • Partnership
