**Software Engineer, Safety Engineering** **About the Team** The Safety Systems organization is responsible for safety work to ensure OpenAI's models can be safely deployed. The Safety Engineering team builds platforms and tools that make OpenAI's models safe for real-world use, partnering with researchers, product teams, and policy to turn safety ideas into reliable, scalable systems. **About the Role** We're looking for a self-starter engineer to build full-stack tooling for Safety Systems teams that improves the safety and reliability of OpenAI's models, including in sensitive areas like mental health and vulnerable-user protections. **Key Responsibilities** • Own end-to-end development of internal tools for model safety improvement • Partner with researchers, engineers, and policy creators to understand workflows and translate them into product solutions • Build full-stack experiences for labeling, inspecting data, analyzing failure cases, and surfacing insights • Optimize applications for usability, speed, and scale • Transform AI-assisted safety workflows into external-facing products **Requirements** • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience at tech and product-driven companies • Proficiency with JavaScript, React, and web technologies • Proficiency with at least one backend language (Python preferred) • Experience with relational databases (Postgres/MySQL) • Interest in AI/ML (direct experience not required) • Ability to partner closely with researchers and policy writers **About OpenAI** OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
