**Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Legal-SF** **ABOUT THE TEAM** OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering team partners with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems. We embed deeply with users to solve high-leverage problems, moving quickly from prototype to deployment while surfacing patterns that shape the platform. **ABOUT THE ROLE** Build and deploy AI systems for legal work. You'll embed with customers—often senior legal practitioners—to identify use cases, rapidly prototype solutions, and prove measurable value. Own technical work from discovery through production adoption, translating workflows into product feedback. Scale successful deployments across the legal market. **Location:** San Francisco or New York City (hybrid, 3 days/week in office) **Travel:** Up to 50% may be required **KEY RESPONSIBILITIES** • Embed with law firms to understand workflows and identify high-value opportunities • Build full-stack systems delivering customer value • Guide adoption and make scope/speed/quality trade-offs • Contribute code when needed for progress or clarity • Codify patterns into tools and playbooks • Share field feedback to Research and Product teams **YOU MIGHT THRIVE IF YOU HAVE** • 5+ years software engineering, ML engineering, or technical deployment experience in regulated industries • Experience with legal tech, compliance workflows, or professional services (helpful but not required) • End-to-end ownership of complex AI/data systems in high-consequence environments • Production-grade code skills (Python, JavaScript, or comparable) • LLM/generative model deployment experience • Clear communication across engineering, product, risk, compliance, and executive teams • Systems thinking with high execution standards • Calm, decisive approach to urgent, ambiguous, high-stakes delivery **ABOUT OPENAI** AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
