**Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Legal-NYC** **ABOUT THE TEAM** OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering team partners with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems. We embed deeply with users to solve high-leverage problems, moving quickly from prototype to deployment while surfacing patterns that shape the platform. **ABOUT THE ROLE** We're hiring an FDE to build and deploy AI systems for legal work. You'll embed with customers—often senior legal practitioners—to identify use cases, rapidly prototype solutions, and prove measurable value. You'll own technical work from discovery through production adoption, translating workflows into product feedback. **KEY RESPONSIBILITIES** • Embed with law firms to understand workflows and identify high-value opportunities • Build full-stack systems that deliver customer value • Guide adoption and make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality • Contribute code when needed to drive progress • Codify patterns into reusable tools and playbooks • Share field feedback to improve models and products **YOU MIGHT THRIVE IF YOU HAVE** • 5+ years of software/ML engineering or technical deployment experience in regulated industries • Experience with legal tech, compliance workflows, or professional services (helpful but not required) • End-to-end ownership of complex AI/data systems in high-stakes environments • Production-grade coding skills (Python, JavaScript, or comparable) • LLM/generative model deployment experience • Strong cross-functional communication with engineering, product, risk, and compliance teams • Systems thinking with high execution standards • Calm decision-making under urgent, ambiguous, high-stakes conditions **LOCATION & WORK MODEL** San Francisco or New York City | Hybrid (3 days/week in office) | Up to 50% travel | Relocation assistance available *OpenAI is an equal opportunity employer.
