We are building the platform for the future, trusted by companies like OpenAI, PayPal, Ramp, Supreme, and millions of developers worldwide. **About the Role** The Next.js team builds the open source framework that powers millions of applications. We're looking for an Engineering Team Lead to help build and lead a team working on Next.js. This is a hands-on player/coach role where you'll be an engineer first and a manager second—spending the majority of your time on technical leadership and engineering execution. **What You Will Do** • Build and ship Next.js: Write production code, review pull requests, debug difficult issues • Lead major technical initiatives: Own complex projects from exploration through production • Set technical direction: Make architectural decisions across rendering, caching, routing, and build systems • Stay close to real problems: Investigate performance issues and turn learnings into framework improvements • Raise the engineering bar: Establish strong patterns for code quality, testing, and reliability • Coach through the work: Help engineers grow through pairing, design reviews, and technical feedback • Provide focused people leadership: Set expectations, give feedback, support career development • Improve team execution: Create lightweight planning practices that clarify ownership • Partner across Vercel: Work with Product, Design, and other engineering teams • Champion open source: Work in public and engage thoughtfully with contributors • Help grow the team: Participate in recruiting and assess technical talent **About You** • 8+ years of software engineering experience with hands-on coding • Led engineers or small technical teams (team lead, tech lead, staff engineer, or founder) • Recent experience writing, reviewing, and shipping production code • Strong technical judgment in React, framework architecture, or large-scale open source • Experience building products or infrastructure for developers • Think in systems and guide teams toward clean abstractions • Comfortable working through ambiguity and solving from first principles • Balance speed and quality with incremental delivery • Communicate clearly and facilitate productive technical debate **Bonus** • Experience maintaining major open source projects in React/Next.js ecosystem • Experience with compilers, bundlers, caching, or rendering systems • Experience leading small senior teams while making substantial individual contributions • Familiarity with Next.js codebase **Compensation & Benefits** SF base pay: $230,000–$340,000 (adjusted by location).
