**Software Engineer, Payments** **About the Role:** Join Gusto's Payments team to design and build infrastructure powering money management and movement operations. You'll guide large technical projects end-to-end, drive architectural decisions for scale and modularity, and maintain code powering core experiences. **About the Team:** Payments handles all money management operations across Gusto's suite of businesses. The team is re-architecting the payments platform to move money safely and at scale between partners, employers, employees, and government authorities. **Day-to-Day Responsibilities:** • Design, build, and test infrastructure enabling custom-tailored payment experiences • Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications in the world • Collaborate on complex problems with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Product, Design, Data Science, Operations) • Build software powering multiple products serving millions of businesses • Mentor fellow engineers on scalable solutions **What We're Looking For:** • 7+ years of experience in a collaborative, test-driven environment • Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software and distributed systems • Track record influencing multiple teams on scaling and optimizing legacy products • Strong ability to architect large-scale, maintainable, well-documented production code • Talent for bringing clarity to complex, ambiguous problems • Excellent communication of technical complexity and tradeoffs • **Highly Preferred:** Payments and/or Accounting systems experience • **Bonus:** Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React experience **Compensation & Location:** • Denver & most remote: $183,000–$200,000/yr • San Francisco, Seattle, New York: $222,000–$245,000/yr • Hybrid: 2–3 days/week in office (Denver, SF, NYC, or Scottsdale) • Remote work requires secure, reliable internet connection **About Gusto:** Gusto helps small businesses manage payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR.
