**Principal Software Engineer, Pricing Platform** **About Upstart** Upstart is the leading AI lending marketplace, partnering with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through advanced technology. The platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. **The Team** Upstart's Core Pricing team drives key initiatives that directly influence revenue streams, unit economics, and product strategy. The team builds systems that translate underwriting insights into accurate risk and profitability decisions for every loan originated. **Your Impact** • Define cross-company technical vision and roadmap for the pricing platform • Lead architectural evolution toward modular, reusable platform capabilities • Design and improve Tier 0/Tier 1 services with critical latency, throughput, and availability requirements • Partner with ML scientists to create reliable boundaries between models and production systems • Balance competing needs across engineering, ML, and product teams • Reduce operational burden through better testing, observability, and architecture • Lead company-wide technical discussions and build alignment across organizations • Mentor senior technical leaders and expand team effectiveness **Tech Stack** Python (Django, FastAPI, Celery), Kotlin/Spring Boot, gRPC/Protobuf, Temporal, AWS (S3, RDS/Postgres, ElastiCache), Kubernetes/Helm, Datadog **Requirements** • 8+ years software engineering experience (BS in CS/Engineering/Math or equivalent) • Track record setting architecture for large distributed systems • Deep backend experience in Python, Kotlin, or Java • Experience designing Tier 0/Tier 1 services • Strong understanding of APIs, microservices, containerization, and cloud infrastructure • Hands-on technical judgment and strong communication skills • Demonstrated success leading cross-organization technical decisions • Experience mentoring senior engineers **Preferred** • Experience with pricing, risk, fraud, or real-time decisioning systems • ML productionization experience at scale • Platform modernization experience • AWS, Kubernetes, microservices expertise • Background in statistics, mathematics, economics, or quantitative domains **Location & Travel** Remote (US-based). Digital-first with quarterly in-person onsites (2-4 days). **Compensation** Base Salary: $195,300 – $270,400 USD (varies by location) Includes bonus, equity, 401(k) match, health coverage, paid leave, and more.
