Through services including JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R, we help people learn, grow, and overcome barriers to education—while building a culture where everyone can thrive. ## The Role ITHAKA Labs is seeking an **Engineering Manager** for its **Transfer Explorer** team. Transfer Explorer is a growing platform that helps **students, school administrators, and advisors** understand how **earned credits and prior learning experiences** transfer and count toward a degree at a new institution. Transfer Explorer is managed as a startup within ITHAKA Labs, with the goal of scaling toward impact and sustainability. As Engineering Manager, you will: - Lead the technical direction of the Transfer Explorer effort - Ensure the platform delivers an excellent experience for both **data providers** and **student users** - Empower and grow the engineering team - Play an active role in scaling the startup within ITHAKA Labs ## Responsibilities - **Team supervision:** Manage and grow a team of engineers (goal setting and review, time/expense management, mentorship, performance management, and recruitment as needed). Partner with designers, researchers, and product/project managers to set the team up for success. - **Technical leadership:** Enable a dynamic engineering team to deliver a platform with **scalable, sustainable data processing pipelines** and **best-in-class UX**, with **security and observability** built in. - **Vendor and partner management:** Own relationships with technical vendors (including **DXtera**), manage contracts and deliverables, and coordinate integrations with the team. Support partnership development with project leadership. - **Project leadership:** Participate in Transfer Explorer and ITHAKA Labs leadership teams, including business/contingency planning, roadmapping, grant application and management, and exploring new partnerships. ## Experience and Skills **Required** - **10+ years** developing and managing web-based software applications, including experience with **cloud environments (e.g., AWS)** - **3+ years** managing and developing software engineers - Ability to create technology-driven solutions that are both **innovative and feasible** - Experience scaling from **prototype to scalable, sustainable infrastructure**, including judgment on resilience/structure investment - Experience with **agile** approaches (e.g., lean startup and design-thinking inspired methods, hypothesis-driven experimentation, iterative releases, validated learning) - Experience architecting software across multiple components, including **data pipelines** - Strong collaboration and communication skills **Preferred** - Experience working with data from higher education institutions (e.g., student information systems, degree audit systems, transfer articulation, or student records operations) ## Work Authorization and Sponsorship ITHAKA is **not currently considering candidates** who require **immigration sponsorship** (additional work authorization or permanent work authorization) to work in the United States. ## Compensation and Benefits - **Starting salary range:** **$138,000–$173,000** per year (based on knowledge, skills, and experience) - Benefits may include: medical, dental, and vision; **employer-paid 10% retirement contribution**; paid parental and caregiver leave; **22 days PTO**; **11 paid h
