Supporting 500,000+ small businesses with teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. **About the Role** We're seeking a Staff Engineer to join our Tax Credits team—an emerging app helping customers discover and leverage available tax credits and grants at scale. You'll work on complex, ambiguous problems and create simple, delightful experiences that drive measurable customer impact. **Key Responsibilities** • Design, build, and test core Gusto products • Mentor engineers solving complex technical problems at large scale • Help scale one of the world's largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering • Prototype, iterate, and launch features that customers love **What We're Looking For** • 8+ years of software development experience • Track record building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain • Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and improve testing • Curiosity with emerging AI frameworks and best practices • Ownership of multi-quarter projects with measurable impact • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance optimization, and reliability • Mentoring ability and strong communication skills • Ruby on Rails experience preferred • Appreciation for collaborative, test-driven environments **Compensation & Details** • Denver/Remote: $163,000–$204,000 • San Francisco/New York: $197,000–$247,000 • Stock equity additional • Hybrid: 2–3 days/week in office (Denver, SF, NYC, or Scottsdale) • Two-day onboarding travel required **Equal Opportunity Employer** Gusto welcomes diverse backgrounds and provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
