**Staff Backend Engineer** **About Carbon Direct** Carbon Direct is a purpose-driven carbon management firm dedicated to helping organizations reach their climate goals. We make carbon science accessible and actionable with our end-to-end platform. **The Role** We're hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to help build and scale the systems our customers rely on to overcome their carbon, climate strategy, and energy challenges. You'll set technical direction and ensure the platform holds together as it scales, flexing across feature development, architecture, operations, and developer experience. **What You'll Do** • Design, build, and deploy robust backend services, data pipelines, and highly available APIs • Prototype quickly to test hypotheses and harden validated prototypes for enterprise-scale adoption • Make sound architectural decisions with limited precedent • Flex into devops and SRE work as needed • Support developer experience for AI-empowered contributors from non-engineering backgrounds • Set technical direction and mentor other engineers **What We're Looking For** • Extensive professional experience as a backend engineer at staff level • Vertical ownership: database schema through API, tests, and production monitoring • Infrastructure fluency: IaC, CI/CD, observability, incident response • Experience using agentic engineering tools and deploying AI-augmented systems to production • Track record of building shared packages, tooling, and documentation • Strong collaboration skills with product, science, and customer-facing teams • Genuine interest in carbon and climate (strong plus) **Bonus Points** • Experience in regulated environments (ISO 27001, SOC 2) • Depth in production AI-augmented systems **Salary & Benefits** $184,000–$225,000/year Comprehensive medical, dental, vision • Flexible vacation + 10 holidays • 16 weeks paid parental leave • Remote-friendly culture • Work-from-home stipend **Locations:** Seattle, WA | Oakland, CA | Remote-friendly
