**Engineering Manager, Starter Kit (Publishing)** **About the Role** The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Publishing group's Starter Kit team. You'll be a key technical and operational leader working with product, design, and newsroom partners to build solutions for editorial and internal workflows. You'll manage a team of 5-6 engineers and report to a Senior Engineering Manager. **Key Responsibilities** • Manage, coach, and mentor 5-6 mid- to staff level engineers with career development and feedback • Guide technical strategy with a tech lead and plan the product roadmap with partners • Oversee team processes, measurement, and delivery; advocate for AI and agentic development • Maintain high technical standards for performance, security, observability, and quality • Bridge engineering teams, partners, and stakeholders; advocate for technical maintenance • Cultivate a team culture built on trust, collaboration, and psychological safety **Basic Qualifications** • 1+ years as an Engineering Manager with people management responsibilities • 5+ years hands-on software engineering experience with modern frontend (TypeScript/ES6+, HTML, CSS) • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP) • Experience planning roadmaps and managing cross-functional execution **Preferred Qualifications** • GraphQL APIs, Apollo Client, or collaborative rich text editing experience • Design systems and shared frontend libraries experience • Interest in leading AI and agentic workflow development • Digital journalism or content management experience **Compensation** Base salary: $152,000–$190,000 USD Plus variable pay, bonuses, RSUs, and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, paid leave, and professional development. **Work Model:** Hybrid | **Req ID:** REQ-020556
