**Staff Software Engineer: Platform R&D** **About the Role** Join SolarWinds' Platform R&D organization as a Staff Software Engineer. Design, build, and evolve core backend systems powering large-scale cloud services and data-intensive platforms. Work on distributed systems handling high-volume operational and telemetry data while ensuring scalability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and implement distributed backend systems for high-throughput, low-latency workloads • Lead architecture and technical direction for data ingestion, transformation, storage, and serving services • Build and improve real-time and near-real-time data pipelines for large-scale use cases • Drive system reliability, scalability, and operability through strong design and automation • Partner across teams to define interfaces, evolve schemas, and support safe integration patterns • Improve performance across storage, compute, messaging, caching, and API layers • Establish approaches for fault tolerance, failure recovery, and capacity planning • Contribute to technical strategy for platform modernization and backend architecture evolution • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and raise engineering standards • Participate in incident response and post-incident improvement work **Required Qualifications** • 8+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production backend systems at scale • Strong distributed systems design experience with understanding of consistency, availability, durability, and performance trade-offs • Experience with data-intensive applications or event-driven/streaming architectures • Strong programming skills in Rust, Go, Java, Python, or similar languages • Cloud-native infrastructure and containerized environment experience • Experience with APIs, service-to-service communication, and scalable data storage systems • Strong debugging and performance tuning skills across multi-service systems • Demonstrated ability to lead technically across team boundaries • Strong written and verbal communication skills **Preferred Qualifications** • Observability, telemetry, or large-scale data platform architecture experience • Stream processing, message brokers, and asynchronous system design experience • Distributed databases, analytical data stores, or high-scale storage systems experience • Kubernetes and modern cloud platform operations familiarity • Experience designing systems balancing reliability, cost efficiency, and developer velocity • Internal platform capabilities experience • Schema evolution, metadata management, or distributed data modeling experience • Cross-functional technical initiative leadership experience
